PLANT KINGDOM

 IMPORTANT TERMS:

Antheridium: A male sex organ, which is covered with a jacket of sterile cells and produces sperms.

Archegonium: A female sex organ, which is covered with a jacket of sterile cells, and produces  egg or female gamete.

Gamete (sex cell): A specialized haploid cell which fuses with another gamete to form zygote during sexual reproduction.

Gametophyte: The gamete producing phase in the life cycle of a plant, which is haploid in nature.

Spore: A haploid (sometimes diploid) structure which directly produces a plant.

Sporangium: A spore producing sac-like structure.

Sporogonium: A short lived sporophyte of bryophytes, which is attached to the gametophyte.

Sporophyte: The asexually reproducing phase in the life cycle of a plant, which is diploid in nature.

Prothallus: The reduced and short lived gametophyte of ferns and other pteridophytes.

Pollination: The process of transfer of pollen grains form microsporangium to the ovule or stigma in spermatophytes.
